Alford Exhibit on display through November 7, 2014
The exhibit covers seven generations shown through photographs, family tree diagram, artifacts, books and memorabilia representing over 200 years. The Alford family traces its roots back to the late 1700s in Morgan and Troup Counties in Georgia. We have documented our oldest known ancestor, Lydia Alford, who was born in 1785 and lived over 100 years. Cora Alford Williams (6th generation) born in Morgan County planted the genealogy seeds 15 years ago with an oral history of our African American family. Our Historian has documented over 800 descendants of Lydia Alford including those with family names of Armour, Clayburn, Edwards, Gay, Gaythur, Means, Paschal, Terrell, Williams and Young.
“Unite, as we reveal and preserve the essence of our lives…
the time we’ve lived in, the people and events that have helped
to shape us, how and whom we’ve loved, what has inspired us,
how we’ve survived, and how we’ve kept the connections between generations as we write and collect our legacy stories.”
Gregory T. Williams, President
Alford African American Family of Georgia
